PRR 373, HH-1, 1947 |
Description: |
Coal Power. Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Columbus, Ohio, on 10 October 1947. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #373, an HH-1 (2-8-8-2) built by the American Locomotive Company as Norfolk & Western Railroad number "2000" during February of 1919, sold to the PRR and renumbered "373" in July of 1943, and retired in November of 1947 after 28 years of two-system service. This locomotive may have been involved in a wreck: the front of the smoke box is gone, as is part of the left cylinder assembly, and the pilot steps are bent back. |

CO 2-8-8-2 #1541 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
Massive is not descriptive enough for this Alco-Schenectady 2-8-8-2 locomotive named a "Chesapeake" wheel configuration by C&O. This was delivered to C&O in 1924 as #1100 but renumbered in 1926. For some reason the railroad replaced 1124 with 1540 and 1100 with 1541 with the rest of the class receiving 1542-1564 in order. Known as "Simple Simons" or "Simons" (according to C&O Power) because they operated as simple-expansion articulateds, unlike the earlier compound Mallets. Specifics - 57" drivers, 215 psi boiler pressure, 23x32" cylinders, engine weight of 567,500 lb, impressive tractive effort of 108,547 lb. To UP 3571 in 1945, retired in February 1947. from C.W. Dwarfed by the massive Alco-Schenectady built 2-8-8-2, two onlookers study the massive power. Note the interesting dormitory car to the right. Delivered to C&O in March of 1924 as #1115 (blder #64968), this class was known as "Simple Simons" or "Simons" (according to C&O Power) because they operated as simple-expansion articulateds, unlike the earlier compound Mallets. Specs - H--7, 57" drivers, 215 psi boiler pressure, 23x32" cylinder. According to the C&O Historical Society, the engine weight was 567,500 lb with an impressive tractive effort of 108,550 lb. CO 2-8-8-2 #1558 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
One of the original 25 built by Alco in 1924, this H-7 class "Chesapeake" type locomotive was able to pull 9,500 ton trains over the 113 mile run from Russell, Kentucky to Columbus, Ohio in 5 hours according to www.steamlocomotive.com. This wheel type soon replaced teh 2-10-4 and the 2-6-6-6 Alleghenies in the territory. A real power monster! Unfortunately no location, date or photographer credit was listed for this photo. Looks like West Virginia or Kentucky from the background. |

CO 2-8-8-2 #1564 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
This massive loco almost has the appearance of two 2-8-0's mashed together under one cowling shell and probably why Southern Pacific referred to these locos as "Mallet Consolidations". Built by Alco-Schenectady in March of 1924, this 2-8-8-2 wheel configuration was dubbed the "Chesapeake" by C&O and was classified as H-7. Originally this unit was numbered 1123 but renumbered in 1926. Sold to the RF&P as #2 in May 1943, it was a hump engine at Potomac Yard until retired in March 1949. from C.W. Jernstrom collection |

SLSF 2-8-8-2 #2007 - St Louis-San Francisco |
Description: |
This 1910 Alco built Chesapeake-type articulated loco had small 57" drivers and could generate 200 psi for its 24.5"x30" high pressure cylinders followed by its 39"x30" low pressure cylinders. The engine weight was 418,000 lb and it could produce a very respectable 77,018 lb. The Firsco Shops then superheated the class in 1918. Finally retired in April of 1931. No photographer was listed. |

Description: |
A rare site is the restored tender of Norfolk & Western #2050. With equipment out for the day, there was an oppertunity to photograph some of the larger steam in barn 9. |

N&W 2050 |
Description: |
Norfolk and Western 2050 was built by ALCO in 1923 as a 2-8-8-2 Mallet compound articulated. It hauled coal in the Appalachians until 1959, when it was sold to ARMCO steel as a portable boiler. ARMCO donated it to IRM in 1976, and it came to Union two years later, making one of only two 2-8-8-2s left. Behind it is South Shore Little Joe 803. |
